INGREDIENTS1 cup shortening1 cup molasses1 tsp. baking soda%u00bd cup hot water1 cup sugar1 egg1 tsp. vanilla1 tsp. cinnamon%u00bd tsp. ginger%u00bc tsp. cloves1 tsp. salt5%u00bd cups flourDIRECTIONSBring shortening and molasses to boil in a large pan. Boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat.In a small bowl, mix baking soda into the water. Add to the molasses mixture. (Careful, this will bubble up quite a bit!)Mix in remaining ingredients, all but the f lour. Mix in f lour. The dough stiffens as it hardens.Roll the dough to about %u00bc inch thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut gingerbread men shapes from the dough. Place them on lightly greased cookie sheets.Bake at 375%u00b0 for 8%u201310 min.
